Do Less in More Time

Here’s a simple thought for your holiday season.

How can I get less done in more time?

I know it’s a bit counterintuitive, with all the mounting demands of the season. You’ve got all those commercials of Kelly Ripa doing everything for everybody with her new Electrolux appliances. Or your kids making you think an iPhone is essential to their well being…in 5th grade. But take a step back for a moment and ask yourself if the pressure you feel is legitimate or just simply urgent.

I am in the process of establishing a young restaurant. I know full well there are times I’ve just got to buckle in and work myself to exhaustion in order to see the place succeed. This is why people like me own their own business and are capable of being their own boss. There are no allergic reactions or aversions to this kind of workload.

But hopefully I maintain a healthy level of self preservation and see the connection between the sustainability of food development and living a sustainable life. It is senseless to promote a way of eating that does not match a congruent way of living.

What does it matter if my spring mix is organic if I allow other toxins like insecurity, fear and anger to be absorbed into my system? It is useless to eat free range eggs when my soul is caged by silly demands that don’t amount to a hill of beans.

So what’s more important at the holidays, enjoying friends and family or impressing them out of some unspoken requirement? Do you have to give so many gifts, even when there is not enough money or joy out of which to bear them?

Like your food, make your holiday lifestyle sustainable. Remember the simple things. Don’t spend more than you have. Don’t eat more than you need. Love people and use things, not vice versa.

We will close at 3pm on Wednesday, November 26th and reopen at 7am on Friday, November 28. The Huskers play Colorado, so we will have our game day menu that day in lieu of Friday Pasta Special.

Happy Thanksgiving.
